Man dies after tiger attack at Yorkshire Wildlife Park on Saturday 10 October

A man entered the tiger enclosure at the Doncaster park on Saturday afternoon, was attacked, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The tiger was uninjured, visitors were evacuated, and the park will stay closed on Sunday.

A man has died after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster and being attacked by a tiger, South Yorkshire Police said on Saturday.

The force said it received reports at 1.35pm on Saturday 10 October that a man had entered the enclosure at the park. “The tiger subsequently attacked the man, resulting in serious injury,” a police spokesperson said.

“Emergency services attended and sadly, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, the man was pronounced dead at the scene,” the spokesperson said. Police said the man's family had been informed and was being supported by specialist officers.

Police confirmed the tiger was uninjured and remained in the enclosure after the incident, and said there was no wider risk to the public. The park was evacuated and officers remained on the scene carrying out enquiries.

“We are aware of videos circulating online and we would encourage people not to share this distressing footage,” the force said.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park said a serious incident had occurred at the tiger enclosure and that its emergency response procedures were immediately activated. “We are working closely with the authorities to ascertain exactly what happened,” the park said, adding that the park would remain closed on Sunday.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said it was called to the park at 1.33pm on Saturday and sent two land ambulances, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and a doctor to the scene.

The park's Land of the Tigers attraction, a two-acre reserve for endangered Amur tigers, opened in 2011. Yorkshire Wildlife Park itself opened in 2009.
